THE FUNDAMENTAL RULES OF ENGLISH STRESSING
1. The stress almosst always remains on the original root
A. Examples with suffixes:
happiness, understanding, homeless, strongly, entertainment
B. Examples with prefixes:
Pretest, alive, impossible, rewrite, illogical, dislike, uncomfortable.
Exceptions: forecast, forhead, updringking
2. These 10 endings receive the stress
a. –ain: remain, again
b. –oo: taboo, bamboo
c. –oon: afternoon, monsoon
d. –ee: referee, agree
e. –eer: engincer, volunteer
f. –esque: picturesque
g. –ique: unique
h. –ette: cigarette, cassette
i. –ese: Japannese, Vietnamese
j. –ade: degrade
3. These 15 endings cause the stress to fall on the previous syllable
a. –ic: Pacific, Atlantic
b. –ion: question, prevention
c. –ity: ability, elactricity
d. –ial: industrial
e. –ual: continual
f. –ular: singular, irregular
g. –ical: economical
h. –iate: alleviate
i. –ify: modify, identify
j. –ish: polish, perish
k. –id: acid
l. –it: limit, visit
m. –ious: religious
n. –eous: advantageous
o. –itude: longgitude, attidude
4. The stress is put on the 3rd syllable from the end in the words having the endings.
a. –ate: consolidate, educate, demonstrate, concentrate
b. –fly: satisfy, modify, beautyfy
c. –ize/ise: recognize, modernize, socialize, sympathize
5. Three-syllable law (For words with more than 3 syllables)
3rd syllable from the end receives the stress: wonderful, beautiful
6. Compound noun
The first element reciceives the stress: shoolyard, shoolgate
7. Stress of words having two syllables and the same spelling
• Nouns & Adjective: 1st syllable reciceves the stress (Ex: present, export, import …)
• Verb: 2nd sylable reciceves the stress (Ex: present, export, import …)
Exception: visit, promise, reply, advice.
8. Stress in two-syllable words
• Verb / Adjs / Advs / Preps: 2nd syllable is stress
- If it contains along vowel or diphthong (Ex: arrive, contain…)
- If it ends whith more than one consonant (Ex: atract, attack…)
Eceptions: honest, pesfect
• Verbs / Adjs / Advs / preps: 1st syllable is stressed
- If it contains a short vowel and ends in one or no consonant (Ex: enter, simple)
